Unlikely ally? In their attempt to prevent Trump from being on the ballot in 2024, his detractors are pointing to Neil Gorsuch, one of the former president's selections to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court will unavoidably become the venue for the legal dispute over Donald Trump's eligibility to run for office in 2024, and opponents of the former president are specifically targeting Neil Gorsuch, his first choice.

Democrats Shenna Bellows, the secretary of state of Maine, used Gorsuch as support for her ruling on Thursday, stating that Trump cannot run for office in her state due to his involvement in the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The justices cited Gorsuch in a related ruling earlier this month by the Colorado Supreme Court. Trump's adversaries have focused in on a brief ruling that Gorsuch penned in 2012, almost five years before Trump selected him to succeed the late Justice Antonin Scalia as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit.

In the case, a presidential contender from Colorado was removed from the ballot for not being a "natural born citizen," as required by the Constitution.
